History of Yoni Steaming

Yoni steaming is a herbal medicine treatment that stretches over millennia and is international and multicultural in nature. This practice has indigenous roots in African, Mayan, Greek, Native American, Caribbean, Japanese, Asian, and Filipino  Cultures. Although Yoni Steaming is widely practiced around the world it is something that has no real documented history and has been passed down through practice from generation to generation. This technique for treating the vagina has many names not limited to but including: Korean name Chai-yok, Mayan term is Bajo, Ayurveda term is Yoni Svedana, Indonesian term is Ratus and in the United States this technique is called hip bath, V-Steaming, Vaggie Steaming or Yoni Steaming.

 

 

What is a Yoni Steaming

Yoni Steaming is the  process in which herbs are steeped in hot water to create a herb infused steam to cleanse and nourish the uterus. The steam is used to open up the pores and allow the nutrients of the herbs to be absorbed directly to the vagninal  and groin regions. V-Steaming is a gentle, soothing way you can assist your vaginal structures and reproductive organs in healing ailments as well as give a supportive nug as your reproductive system cleanses itself. Although it is called v-steaming in the US this ancient technique for cleansing  is the uterus is actually a uterine lavage. The technique has a modern spin with a lot of new accessories, but it is very simple and easy to do at home without all of the bells and whistles. I promote finding a technique at home that promotes relaxation and a ritual you enjoy that is meaningful to you.  

 

Yoni Steaming is a gentle non-invasive way to treat ailments of the reproductive system and  assists your body to heal vaginal structures, reproductive organs, the perineum, and rectal structures. The steam is used for feminine aspects of healing, but it beneficial to the groin region in general. In addition this method of treatment can be used successfully on men concerning  their reproductive health.

Yoni Steaming has a long list of benefits including but not limited to detoxing womb, relieves abdominal pain, assists in healing damaged tissue, tones vaginal musculature, soothes and helps heal hemorrhoids, eliminates feminine odor, alievates painful menses, regulates menses, assists in regulating hormones, decongests womb, PCOS relief and treatment, treatment of yeast infections.

 

 

What herbs are commonly used

Yoni Steaming is a simple technique with a arsenal of benefits. The majority of the most commonly used herbs can be found in your pantry. However it is advised that organic naturally grown herbs be used whether they are dried or fresh to get the maximum benefit. Commonly used herbs that can be used are oregano, basil, rosemary, marigold (calendula), raspberry leaf, sage, ginger, garlic,  burdock root, red clover, chamomile, dandelion and marshmallow. These herbs can be used in combination or one at a time treat the womb and assist with specific ailments or to treat general womb health.




How do you Yoni Steam

Toilet/Chair Method Without Heat Element

  1. Pour 1-2 liters (6-8 cups) of distilled water in a pot and bring to a boil.
  2. Put 1 packet of Educated Lotus Flower Power Original or 1-2 wooden spoonfuls of Educated Lotus Flower Powder of choice into water.
  3. Turn off heat element and cover with lid to steep while keeping the healing properties of the herbs contained 5-10 minutes.
  4. Turn off heat and let sit for 5 minutes with lid on.
  5. Carefully pour contents into a stainless steel or glass bowl that has been placed under your steaming chair/stool or in your toilet bowl. (Bowl should be placed under the seat.)
  6. Remove all clothing from the waist down and use towels or a Yoni Steaming Gown to drape over your body. Draping can be from neck down depending on the desired coverage you want.
  7. Use drapings or gown to vent as need so that the heat is comfortable. The temperature should be warm and soothing, not hot and uncomfortable.
  8. The heat should last 15-20 minutes.
  9. It is important to stay warm by wearing socks and keep the upper body cover with a shirt or additional drapings.

Chair/Stool Method With a Heat Element

  1. Place heating element under steaming chair or stool.  Place stainless steel or glass bowl on the heating element if bowl is needed.
  2. Please use a heat element you find most comfortable. I have seen rice cookers, crockpots as well as electric single burners with the glass or stainless steel bowl placed on top used for Yoni Steaming.
  3. Make sure all electrical plugs for your heat element is not in a position where it can get wet from the heated or boiling water.
  4. Make sure the heat element chosen has adjustable heat settings so that the heat can be adjusted to your comfort level. This will decrease the need to adjust drapings frequently while steaming.
  5. Pour 1-2 Liters (6-8 cups) of distilled water into the bowl or heat element reservoir.
  6. Put 1 packet of Educated Lotus Flower Power Original or 1-2 wooden spoonfuls of Educated Lotus Flower Powder of choice into water.
  7. Allow water to heat until steam is raising from the water.
  8. At this time lower heat by one setting or 20 degrees.  Some heat elements used for prolonged steaming like a rice steamer may have boil, steam, or simmer settings. Never steam on the highest settings. It is optimal to steam on the lowest setting the will produce a consistent warm steam to the groin region.   
  9. Remove all clothing from the waist down and use towels or a Yoni Steaming Gown to drape over your body. Draping can be from neck down depending on the desired coverage you want.
  10. Use drapings or gown to vent as need so that the heat is comfortable. The temperature should be warm and soothing, not hot and uncomfortable.
  11. With use of a heat element the steams can last for a prolonged amount of time. It is commonly done for  30-45 minutes when using a heat element.
  12. It is important to stay warm by wearing socks and keep the upper body cover with a shirt or additional drapings.
  13. When using a heat element please make sure that your heat on a comfortable setting. The heat should be set on a temperature that is soothing and relaxing. It should not be uncomfortable at any time. If the heat feels uncomfortable please adjust heat to a lower setting.

Why Use A Heat Elements

Yoni Steams done in the spa setting usually use a heat element to prolong the steaming experience. This is not a bad or a good technique; it is just different. It is also a matter of preference. If you are new to Yoni Steaming  or would like to try using a heat element it is optimal to have a treatment done in a spa before purchasing equipment without knowing how much you will be pleased with the prolonged experience.

 

 

 

What Rituals and Routines Should Used With Yoni Steaming

Routines-  The routine can vary for Yoni Steaming. For example for painful menses steaming should be done 3 times weekly to alleviate pain before, during, or after cycle. This should be done for one week prior to cycle and done for several months until pain has resolved. For Postmenopausal and women without vaginal discord steaming should be done quarterly. Rituals- Yoni Steaming rituals can vary greatly. Different steaming rituals can be seen by scrolling images of steaming practices at various spas that offer Yoni Steaming as a service. In addition to what is seen, I believe that you should create the atmosphere as well as a ritual that is meaningful and personal to you. It could be as simple as wearing a Yoni Gown that is your favorite color or that has a pattern that you like to having a special area/room to steam in that pays tribute to your Yoni. No matter if you decide to use solar infused water,  light candles, play relaxing music, or burn incense I believe firmly that you should speak to your herbs and your water used. Speak intention into your herbs and ask for the experience you desire. Whether it is to alleviate an ailment or to purge this region of negative energy, speak your intention. If you do not know what you desire specifically speak positive manifestations into them asking for general healing of your womb and to bring positive energy to your womb. I am a believer in intention and for asking for what you want. I also believe that all of the ritura books and prayers are not as important as you speaking your intention and your request. Because everyone is different it is important to ask for yourself and believe you will receive what your desire.
